This is a film review from the Melbourne International Film Festival 2008. To see all my reviews from the festival, go here.

Want the short review? Go see the movie. I’m telling you to, if you don’t need a reason. If my review was your resolution to your wavering doubt I’ll just tell you know. Go see it. It’s great. You will have a good time.

Was that not enough? Need a reason> OK fine. Listen up. Son of Rambow is a great little UK film about two 8 year old kids who decide to make their own Rambo movie to enter in a BBC film making competition. They do all their own stunts and shooting, and it soon involves half the school when everyone wants to help.

Not enough? It’s set in the ’80s.

It’s easy enough to compare this movie to Michel Gondry’s ‘Be Kind, Rewind’, and why wouldn’t you? It has many of the same elements. A couple of mismatched guys attempt to recreate movies using whatever resources they have and lessons in friendship are learned along the way. What Rambow here succeeds and where Gindry comes short is the sentimentality. Whilst Gondry seemed to try to force sentimentality in as another element because it needed it, sentimentality is ingrained deply into this movie, it’s an important part that works throughout, not just in the last reel.

In fact, many factors work so well here together. It’s sentimental, whimsical, funny. It’s just a nice time out.

See it for: Just see it.

The Dark Side: ……

The Last Word: Son of Rambow gets a general release in Australia on 6th September.
