Ball Residence

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

This was a fun residence to work on. This marsh front property is located along the tidal waters of Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant. The Ball family are the type of individuals who are open to cutting edge ideas and bold concepts. A complete architectural make-over of the existing house was accompanied with a thorough environmental transformation to create a “unified whole.”

A family should live in every square inch of their property and Jeff and Barbara embrace this idea enthusiastically. The proposed pool is conceptualized as an outdoor room to unite its presence with the house. A Rain Garden, replete with lush, native plantings then further unites the pool area with other site elements and creates a seamless transition to the remainder of the property. Hopefully, this Rain Garden will serve as a biological learning tool for Moultrie and Forbes, their two young sons.

A trough filled with dark, Mexican Pebbles and native plantings mimic a low country, blackwater river and drains the high side of the property to provide a peaceful but bold aesthetic in addition to providing a necessary function. This trough then empties into the Rain Garden to provide moisture, water retention, and erosion control.

Key words: Peaceful, low-impact, habitat, child development, boldness and most of all…FUN!
